We’ve hit a but of a bump in the road the the picks here at the JCB. After a weekend surge, the blog is just 5-7 with its picks the last three nights. Winning on the only double play made during this stretch kept the losses to a minimum, but what a frustrating few nights of hoops. Three of the games we lost on saw us fail against the number but o.5, 0.5 and 1 point. It’s a fine line between running in place and making a major move against the field. Sadly, the last three days we’ve been on the wrong side of that cutline. But, maybe we shouldnt complain too much about luck. We went 2-1 last night and one of wins involved a team coming back from a 20-point deficit on the road. And we’re still playing with a boatload of House Money. So lets not waste any time and get back on the horse. Here are my picks for today.
Central Michigan +2 over Western Michigan, noon, 1 Unit………The bitter Central Michigan-Western Michigan rivalry takes a new twist today with the first ever postseason battle between the two basketball programs in the quarterfinals of the MAC Sectional. I like Central. Their defense is a bit harder to score against tham the Broncos. And, I think they’re going to have abig scoring advantage from behind the arc. In the end, the Broncos will fall short because of that. CMU’s is 47th in the nation at shooting the three ball, while the Broncos are 208th in the country at defending it. Uh-oh. With their two leading scorers Jordan Bitzer and Robbie Harman, the Chips have two of the best three-point marksmen in the conference. . Both shoot better from behind the arc than their overall shooting percentage. Bitzer leads the team in scoring with a 14.9 average, but he’s dropped 18 or more in four of the Chips last five games and in seven of their last 10. Both scorers dropped 22 points apiece on the Broncos nearly two weeks ago when they played, an eventual CMU win. In the end, Central advances on the backs of their three-point shooting. The Broncos 9-20 ATS mark against MAC foes is hurting my interest in this game either.
South Carolina +2 over Alabama, 1:00, 1 Unit……I know, I know, Bama just beat South Carolina in Columbia a few days ago. But, I just cant sit back and not take an SEC East team over an SEC West team in what amounts to a coin flip game. Did you know the West is 9-27 SU this year against the East. More than half the wins have come thanks to the Mississippi schols, the only two west teams that have played well this year. In Devan Downey I Trust. I think his scoring skills–he’s dropped 24 or more in seven of his 10 starts–will be enough to drag the Gamecocks at least into the next round. Personally, I think the wrong team is favored by 2 points. That’s enough for me to risk a unit here.
Marquette +5 over Villanova, 2:30, 2 Units…….this is the second Big East Quarterfinal today. Georgetown-Syracuse to start the day is a juicy matchup, but I honestly dont like betting top seeds in BCS league quarterfinal games. When I do, upsets happen. No Bueno. But, I like this game between Marquette and Villanova a lot more. I dont trust Villanova’s defense against the penetration and three-point ability of Marquette. They fould way too much. Marquette has their tourney legs up and running, while Villanova might be a step slow out of the gates during this quirky afternoon start. Hacking will continue on defense. The Eagles seniors led them yesterday and I think make another statement today in MSG. Marquette is 14-6-1 ATS in their last 21 Big East games and are 7-2 head-to-head with Nova. And, they’ve been better against the best, evidenced by their 10-3-1 ATS mark against teams with a winning record. As stated, Nova has been on a slide defensively, ranking 284th nationally in points allowed. Shaky defenses make for shaky chalk. We’ve seen that with Nova as they’re just 2-5 ATS when laying points since the start of February. The Wildcats have some guady offensive numbers, such as the third ranked scoring O in the land. But Marquette can match most of their numbers. They’re every bit as good as crashing the offensive glass and actually shoot the ball a lot better than Nova from behind the arc. But Marquette is noticeably better on defense, ranking in the top 15-percent in the nation in points allowed and three-point defense. These teams played twice in early January, both 2-point Wildcat wins. I think Marquette is playing a lot better now, while the Cats arent. No reason not to expect another close one. The Golden Eagles have 10 losses this year by a combined 35 points. They dont get blown out, making them a great underdog play. They;re 8-2 ATS when catching points this year.
Indiana +8.5 over Northwestern, 5:00, 1 Unit…..a pick from my Big 10 post today. I’ll jsut leave it at that. Read more »
