Considering how the rest of the tournament went, I did OK with my Group A picks for the first round of games. I correctly picked Russia’s win over the Czech Republic, although it wasn’t as close as I expected (Score was 4-1, I predicted 1-0). My pick of having the Russians winning the group looks good right now. As for the other game, I predicted a 1-0 Poland win over Greece. It was looking good early, but Greece staged an impressive rally for a 1-1 draw, nearly winning. First, let’s recap the first round. The Greeks got off to a nightmarish start against Poland. After conceding an early goal, Greece picked up a red card and went down to 10 men. But somehow, the defensive Greeks found an offensive spark when that happened, dominating play the rest of the way. First, they equalized. Then, they had a chance to take the lead when Poland’s goalkeeper picked up a red card. Greece missed the penalty kick and finished with a draw. While they could have won, they have to be feeling positive with how things are. For Poland, they also must feel like an opportunity was missed given their start.
